… I’ve traveled thousands of miles on my Harley, grew up with some friends who became famous rock-n-rollers with #1 hits, and friends who no one will ever know.
I grew up on a farm in the Midwest, and lived in some of the wealthiest suburbs in the Southwest. I have had dinner and played golf with the ultra-wealthy, and the well-known. I’ve had lots of money and I’ve been flat-broke (a few times). You wanna learn how to make money? Go broke. I talkin “Top Ramen Soup” broke.
When it’s all said and done I know one one thing… no matter how much money I’ve made, have, or had, I remain closest to my friends who aren’t rich or famous, these people seem closest to the true values in life, the people that will talk to you when you’re carrying only a couple of nickels… Your “true” friends, and family.
I’ve always been, and always will be, a dreamer. I believe if you aren’t, you may miss out on your true talent. I encourage my sons to dream, and dream BIG.
I love being able to sleep at night with a clear conscious. If I screw up, I’ll admit it. If I don’t know something, I’ll ask. Sometimes it’s best to shut up and listen. I tell my son’s the one who speaks the loudest in the room is usually the one who is trying way to hard to prove they know something that they don’t know squat about. Listen, and talk about what you know about, leave the bullshit at the door… if you want to learn something.
I hope if my sons learn anything from me; it’s family, to dream, to love, to find a mentor, to be willing to ask for help, to have true friends, to trust, and if that’s all they learn, I think I’ve done my job.
I’ve worked many years at an 18-hour-a-day pace and juggled many balls at one time, because sometimes that’s what you have to do to make things happen. THAT is what builds character, humility, and integrity. At the end of the day it really all boils down to being a friend and father to my sons. To create. To travel. To learn. And of course, play golf.
Thanks to my Dad and my sons, you are MY hero’s because you taught me these things!
